  Scout Skill Day

Troop 19 has a special opportunity to attend an event held by the District on May 9th where there is a chance for scouts to teach/learn different skills. For younger scouts, it would be beneficial because they would be learning skills needed throughout their scouting careers. But for older scouts, it is pushed for them to teach the skills so they can improve upon their skills that are going to be tested during their Eagle board of review/scout master conference.

Location: Scout Area, South Mountain Reservation, West Orange, NJ
Date/Time: Sat, May 9, 2026, 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Check-in at 8:30 AM.
Cost: $5 per Scout
Registration ends May 6, 10:00 PM.

Sperry RECAP

This past Friday Troop 19 visited the Sperry Observatory and learned a lot about the Andromeda Galaxy and toured the planetarium. It was a great experience especially considering the rising interest in space exploration with the recent Artemis mission. We are looking forward to next year's visit!

Congratulations Penny

We are thrilled to introduce Troop 19’s 20th Eagle Scout Penelope! 🦅

 Scouting Leadership

From attics to online archives, Scout leaders built a 13,500-item virtual museum

Two Scouting America historians, Andrew Coe and Steve Miller, have built a virtual museum with about 13,500 items for the Horseshoe Scout Reservation Alumni Association in Rising Sun, Maryland. What began in 2008 with around 2,000 pieces has grown into a massive digital archive of photos, staff rosters, badges, and memorabilia contributed by over 150 people. Items are scanned and returned so families can keep their originals while sharing them with the Scouting community.

The museum runs on WordPress with searchable galleries, self-guided tours, and video interviews with longtime Scouters. Physical QR-coded markers around Camp Horseshoe link visitors directly to relevant exhibits, blending the in-person and digital experience. The emphasis is on storytelling — documenting traditions like the camp's nightly retreat ceremony dating back to the 1940s.

With Camp Horseshoe's centennial approaching in 2027, Coe and Miller are racing to collect every staff list from the camp's 97-year history and searching for volunteers to carry the project forward.

Scouts Hit the Track with NHRA Champion Antron Brown

Scouting America is proud to announce a dynamic new partnership with AB Motorsports, led by four-time NHRA Top Fuel world champion Antron Brown, a premier team in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Thanks to support from World Wide Technology this partnership brings together two organizations committed to performance, leadership, and the pursuit of excellence—on the track and in life. By uniting the excitement of NHRA drag racing with Scouting America’s mission to prepare young people for the future, this partnership will create powerful new opportunities to inspire the next generation.

As part of this initiative, Scouts and their families will gain unique access to the world of professional motorsports, including: behind-the-scenes experiences, driver meet-and-greets, and exclusive race-day programming with AB Motorsports. These experiences are designed to showcase real-world applications of teamwork, discipline, and innovation—core values shared by both organizations.

A highlight of the partnership is participation in the Youth and Education Services (YES) Program, NHRA’s nationally recognized STEM initiative. During the 2026 race season, Scouts will be invited to attend YES events held on Fridays at select NHRA national events. These immersive sessions introduce students to science, technology, engineering, and math concepts through the lens of drag racing—covering topics like aerodynamics, fuel chemistry, data analysis, and safety engineering. The program connects classroom learning with real-world careers, offering an engaging and memorable educational experience right at the track.

 STEM Skills of the Month

Hi, my name is Teni. I am a junior in high school and a Life Scout working toward Eagle. Each month, this section will highlight a STEM skill and show how Scouts already use science, technology, engineering, and math in everyday Scouting activities.

This month’s focus is navigation using GPS and maps, enhanced by the STEM skill of data analysis and planning. Before a hike, Scouts can analyze trail length, elevation changes, and terrain type to choose the safest and most efficient route. Using math, Scouts estimate hiking time and rest stops, while science helps them understand how weather and elevation affect energy and speed. Technology allows Scouts to compare GPS data with paper maps, and engineering thinking helps them create a navigation plan that includes checkpoints and backup routes.

Fun Fact: GPS works by measuring how long it takes signals from satellites to reach your device, and even a tiny timing error could put your location off by miles.

By applying this STEM skill, Scouts improve accuracy, reduce the risk of getting lost, and make better decisions in the outdoors. This shows how STEM doesn’t replace Scouting skills, but strengthens them.
