Thank you to all scouts who sold tulips, to the scouts and adult volunteers who stepped up this weekend, and especially to all who supported our troop and bought some tulips!

We raised $3,614 to fund our future troop activities, we were able to thank St. Rose by donating a meaningful sum for their Easter flower arrangements, and brought smiles and spring to 45 residents of a local nursing home.

Troop 19 in the news (Spirit of America Youth Leadership Conference)

Ten students from Millburn and surrounding communities recently participated in the Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program, a three-day leadership conference held Feb. 26–28 at the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. The students were nominated by Daniel Cannon, Commander of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 140 – Guy R. Bosworth, and attended the program through sponsorship from the Military Order of World Wars (MOWW) – Philadelphia Chapter.

The students represented a combination of Scouting America Troop 19, chartered by St. Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills, and interns from the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society, many of whom have contributed to local community service initiatives in recent years, including the community's Millburn 250 program commemorating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

The Spirit of America program brings together high school students from across the region to explore American history, leadership, and civic responsibility. Throughout the weekend, participants engaged in workshops, mock congressional debates, and tours of historic sites including Valley Forge and Philadelphia, connecting the ideals of the Constitution with modern leadership challenges.

Scouting Leadership

From attics to online archives, Scout leaders built a 13,500-item virtual museum

Two Scouting America historians, Andrew Coe and Steve Miller, have built a virtual museum with about 13,500 items for the Horseshoe Scout Reservation Alumni Association in Rising Sun, Maryland. What began in 2008 with around 2,000 pieces has grown into a massive digital archive of photos, staff rosters, badges, and memorabilia contributed by over 150 people. Items are scanned and returned so families can keep their originals while sharing them with the Scouting community.

The museum runs on WordPress with searchable galleries, self-guided tours, and video interviews with longtime Scouters. Physical QR-coded markers around Camp Horseshoe link visitors directly to relevant exhibits, blending the in-person and digital experience. The emphasis is on storytelling — documenting traditions like the camp's nightly retreat ceremony dating back to the 1940s.

With Camp Horseshoe's centennial approaching in 2027, Coe and Miller are racing to collect every staff list from the camp's 97-year history and searching for volunteers to carry the project forward.

Key Notes

  • This is a two-night trip (Friday and Saturday nights).
  • We will need registered chaperones for both nights, as well as drivers for both legs of the trip. The troop will cover the cost of adult chaperone registration.
  • Ideally, chaperones will stay for the full weekend. If you are only able to attend for one night, please let us know so we can plan accordingly.
  • When signing up to drive or attend, please treat your commitment as firm. Last-minute changes make it difficult to ensure adequate supervision and transportation.
  • In the event that we have more adult volunteers than needed, we will reach out to some individuals about stepping back.

Millburn Black History Celebration Recap

Troop 19 helped open the 2026 Millburn Black History Celebration at Taylor Park. The event was hosted by Black Americans of Millburn Short Hills (BAMS) and brought the community together to honor the impact of Black history through music, youth leadership, and learning.

Scouts Olivia, Mischa, Navya, and Kiara presented the American flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance. They also shared reflections about inspiring Black Eagle Scouts, including astronaut Guion Bluford, Congressman Charles Rangel, and physicist Walter E. Massey. Their stories showed how the leadership skills learned in Scouting can lead to many different careers.

Millburn Mayor Frank Saccomandi and Township Committee member Michael Cohen welcomed the crowd. Millburn High School Principal Robert B. Nixon Jr. and Millburn Middle School Principal Dr. Jill Sacks also attended to show their support. One of the highlights of the event was a robotics demonstration by students from BAMS and nearby towns, ranging from elementary through middle school.

The students showed how robotics helps young people learn coding, engineering, and teamwork. They are also supporting the Robotics Without Borders initiative, which is working to bring robotics programs to schools in Nigeria. One attendee was so impressed that they made a donation on the spot. At the end of the event, attendees enjoyed African, Caribbean, and African American food and drinks.

 STEM Skills of the Month

Hi, my name is Teni. I am a junior in high school and a Life Scout working toward Eagle. Each month, this section will highlight a STEM skill and show how Scouts already use science, technology, engineering, and math in everyday Scouting activities.

This month’s focus is navigation using GPS and maps, enhanced by the STEM skill of data analysis and planning. Before a hike, Scouts can analyze trail length, elevation changes, and terrain type to choose the safest and most efficient route. Using math, Scouts estimate hiking time and rest stops, while science helps them understand how weather and elevation affect energy and speed. Technology allows Scouts to compare GPS data with paper maps, and engineering thinking helps them create a navigation plan that includes checkpoints and backup routes.

Fun Fact: GPS works by measuring how long it takes signals from satellites to reach your device, and even a tiny timing error could put your location off by miles.

By applying this STEM skill, Scouts improve accuracy, reduce the risk of getting lost, and make better decisions in the outdoors. This shows how STEM doesn’t replace Scouting skills, but strengthens them.
